Designing Your Family Room

By: Alain Berry

For an updated den or family room, you need to think of both form and fashion. This will be a room your family spends the majority of their time in. It will get more use than most other rooms in your house, excluding perhaps the kitchen. Since your family will be spending so much time here, design the room to reflect your family's personal style, making it a room where everybody loves to go and relax. Updating your room should reflect what your family spends time doing and how you will get the best use out of the space. Create an environment that suits your needs and is comfortable, cozy and casual. Follow these guidelines for fun ideas on how to spruce up your most used living space.

Bringing the Movies Home

Is your family a family of movie hounds? Select a fabric sofa in a solid color to resemble a movie theater's seats. Make sure you choose a fabric sofa that is comfortable. You want to be able to enjoy your cinema experience. Add some end tables on either side of the sofas to make way for snacks and drinks. A flat screen TV, if it is in your budget, is also a great addition to this room. If you have neutral walls, add an area rug to complement the fabric sofa. Decorate the room with large movie trailer posters to finish the interior design. Voila! Now you have your very own movie theater at home.

A Room for the Surfing Family

Does your family like to work or surf the internet at leisure time? If so, select some ergonomic seating to keep the room a safe haven for your computer whiz. Ergonomic seating ensures that the hours spent on the computer will be comfortable and not hurt those aching shoulders even more. Around this area you should also have some bright lights and a clean work area. A few good table lamps placed on top of end tables will ensure that you always have proper lighting without an overhead light shining down. Don't be boring with the accessories you choose for your workspace, select a decorative waste basket and use a nice cup for holding pens and pencils from the bathroom section of your home store. This will give you more options than your traditional office supply area.

Let’s Talk!

If your family is more the talkative type, create a conversation area out of two sofas either facing each other or at a ninety degree angle. Add some end tables and a coffee table that you can spruce up with books, cards, and other knick knacks in case the evening calls for some spontaneous fun.
Sofas are the largest piece of furniture in your family room. Make sure you like the look and feel of them. You do not necessarily want them to be the focal point in the room but rather the tool that makes you see some other critical element, a fireplace, the tv, etc.
Pick one or variations of them all to create an entertaining place for your family. This room is yours to enjoy, set it up so you get the most value and pleasure from it.

Spacify has a nice collection of fabric sofa, Ergonomic seating and end tables are exclusively designed to add a decorative value and at the same time give a spacious look to your home.
