Decorate With Indoor Lighting

By: Alain Berry

If you are looking for some interior design ideas without spending a fortune, you could do this by accentuating your indoor lighting. Interior lighting is one of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to bring “new light” to your home and its furnishings. Adding a lamp to a buffet table, changing the wattage of a light bulb, or just moving a lamp from one place to another, are all low cost ways to make difference in the appearance of your room.

There are many options to what indoor lighting to use in what room. Don’t shy away from taking some risks. Think of your choice in light as an accessory to your room. Interior design ideas are not just about furniture and tables. Interior lighting can lend the character, charm or purpose to a room.

Interior Lighting in your Dining Room

In the dining room, your interior lighting is all about the chandelier. For a more formal dining room, choose an elegant one, maybe with crystals or curving nickel lines. Crystal chandeliers are not just for your grandmother’s dining room. There are more modern ones out there that do not cost a fortune. Select one that reflects both your taste and your budget. Scour the antique shops for a rare find or check out your local lighting store for a more modern and simple hanging lamp.

Interior Lighting in the Bedroom

The master bedroom should use color and accents that reflect your softer interior design ideas. One thing to keep in mind as you decorate is that no matter the design inspiration, a bedroom is a place to sleep, so choose calming colors and muted lights with dimmers. Essentially, you will need two types of lighting in the master bedroom—one is the overhead lighting and the other is the lighting next to the bed. The overhead interior lighting gives you a general purpose light for all your daily needs. This is another great place to add a chandelier! The lighting on your night stand lends a soft, warm glow for late night walks out of bed, reading or just a romantic feeling.

Interior Lighting in the Bathroom

Do not overlook the bathroom in your endeavor to design with indoor lighting. If you have a larger bathroom, such as a master bath, add a small table for a few magazines, a vase and a beautiful lamp. This could be a clean, modern look with whites and chromes, or a more romantic look with darker woods, deep colors, and an ornamental lamp with an antique white shade. For a smaller bathroom, show your design with a provocative light fixture above the mirror. Do not just use a standard strip light. Instead go all out and get an ornate fixture with lots of detail.
Finally, it is important that you choose the right light bulb for all your indoor lighting. Brighter for more open spaces, spaces where you will do work like a kitchen or office. Softer wattage is best for a cozier, more romantic feeling. Enjoy what your light does to the room and how it ties all of your interior design ideas together.
